I would have never thought Atlanta and London would have any serious ties. Today, I was proven wrong. I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with an officer who works for City of Atlanta Police Department. He was a member of a force during the ’96 Olympics. We discussed how crisis communication has evolved since then, especially Post 9/11. He discussed issues concerning multi-culturalism, language barriers, and reactionary attitudes by the locals. It was definitely an eye opening experience. The attitude towards the Olympics is somewhat ambivalent: It provides economic growth but actual citizens, sometimes, feel neglected by the influx of international attention. He recommended I probe for these feelings (but not too much because we don’t want a fight).
Looking forward to flying out on July 8.
